Upcoming Investigation Efforts

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is actively investigating potential PFAS sources in Stillwater. That investigation includes sampling private wells.

The City of Stillwater learned in 2022/2023 that it had unsafe PFAS in its drinking water and subsequently stopped using impacted wells. The 2025 MPCA investigation is focused on private wells that could be at risk for unsafe PFAS levels.

This investigation will help determine the source of PFAS in the area. The MPCA anticipates this work taking a few weeks.

Beginning in May 2025, the MPCA will begin its work to sample water and soil throughout Stillwater. You may see MPCA staff and its contractor Braun Intertec performing drill work on City of Stillwater properties and public rights-of-way. You may also receive a request to sample your private well.

The first step is to identify potential sources and private wells that could potentially be at risk.

Private well owners will receive a letter detailing their results. If private wells show levels above applicable drinking water standards, homeowners will be eligible for treatment provided by the MPCA. The MPCA may conduct additional drilling depending on the results.

How monitoring locations are determined

Private wells are selected for sampling and monitoring based on:

  • Their proximity to known or potential PFAS sources
  • An understanding of the subsurface geology and groundwater flow patterns
